Travellers' Cheques

Travellers' Cheques are useful in places where plastic cards are not widely accepted but they can be expensive because you pay commission to buy the cheques and sometimes when you use them as well. However, it is easy to get a quick refund or replacements if they are lost or stolen, and you will generally get a better rate of exchange then you would if you use cash to buy foreign currency. Like foreign currency , travellers' cheques are available from banks , building societies and bureaux de change.

They are sold in fixed denominations, and you have a choice of:

  • Sterling Travellers' Cheques

    They can be used for buying foreign currency abroad, attract commission (of between 1 and 3%) when you buy them in the UK and may attract commission when you use them to purchase currency abroad.

    • If you have sterling cheques left over at the end of the holidays, you can pay them into your bank account at no extra cost.

  • Dollar Travellers' Cheques

    They can be used like sterling travellers' cheques outside the USA because the dollar is such a widely recognized currency. However, if you have any leftover, you may face a charge if you return them. If you use them in the U.S, you should not have to pay commission and they are widely accepted as a method of payment.

  • Foreign Travellers' Cheques

    Are made out in the currency of the country you are going to, ask a bank or tourist office whether it would be better to take foreign currency travellers' cheques. the advantage is that you are able to use them for purchases as well as for getting cash. The disadvantage is that you may have to pay to convert them back into sterling when you get home.

  • Euro Travellers' Cheques

    Are foreign currency cheques made out in euros, which can be used to get cash in "Euro land", so they can be useful if you are visiting one or more country where the euro is used. You may also be able to use them to make purchases but do not rely on this because not all retailers will accept them.
